MUSIC DIRECTOR

Job Summary

The music director will work with the pastor, pianist/organist, and Worship Ministry Team in the general planning and execution of a high-quality church music program in keeping with the church’s mission.

 

*Note: we are also searching for a Church Musician (accompanist). We will consider combining the positions if an applicant has both sets of skills. If you are interested in working as both church musician and music director, please indicate that in your application.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Confer with the pastor on hymns, anthems, special music, and other musical offerings, in support of the worship of the congregation

  • Lead the adult choir during Sunday morning worship service

  • Rehearse the choir on Sunday morning before worship begins, September-May, and during the summer months when the choir sings. (As of September 2021, mid-week choir rehearsal is not being held, and future schedule is yet to be determined)

  • Lead the congregational hymns during Sunday morning worship

  • Provide special music for extra services—currently Christmas Eve, Good Friday Tenebrae, Ash Wednesday, and Hanging of the Greens (early December)

  • Seek out and work with vocal and instrumental soloists and small groups, as appropriate

  • Empower congregation members and friends to use their musical talents in service to God

  • Ensure that all instruments belonging to the church are properly tuned and maintained

 

Other Responsibilities:

  • Work with children’s music as needed

  • Serve as resource person to other staff members and teachers of the church

  • Serve on the Worship Ministry Team

  • Participate in staff meetings

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in music (preferred)

  • Two years of experience (preferred)

  • Familiarity with sacred music

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to physically direct choir and congregation

 

Compensation: Based on experience and ability.

CHURCH MUSICIAN

The church musician will work with the pastor, music director, and Worship Ministry Team in the execution of a high-quality church music program in keeping with the church’s mission.

 

*Note: we are also searching for a Music Director. We will consider combining the positions if an applicant has both sets of skills. If you are interested in working as both church musician and music director, please indicate that in your application.

 

Work schedule: 8-10 hours, including 2.5 hours on Sunday morning.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Play piano and/or organ

  • Provide music for Sunday morning worship service (10:00 am), which may include prelude, offertory, postlude, hymns, choir accompaniments, duets, solo accompaniments, meditative music, etc.

  • Provide musical accompaniment for choir practice on Sunday mornings before worship begins, September-May, and during the summer months when the choir sings. (As of 9/21, mid-week choir rehearsal is not being held, and future schedule is yet to be determined)

  • Practice time in preparation for Sunday worship

  • Provide music for extra services—currently Christmas Eve, Good Friday Tenebrae, Ash Wednesday, and Hanging of the Greens (early December)

 

Other Responsibilities:

  • Practice as needed for any special music

  • Provide music for weddings and funerals when needed (by special arrangement, as available).

    • The church musician shall have the “first right of refusal” for all weddings in the church. Stipend for this to be paid by the wedding couple or family according to the current wedding policy.

  • Degree or education in music (preferred)

  • Two years of experience (preferred)

  • Familiarity with sacred music
