Congregational Life
Grab a cup of coffee or tea and take a look at congregational life at First Presbyterian Church.
You've probably already looked at our largest gatherings of the week - our Sunday worship services, Sunday Church School, and our mid-week gathering, Bread for the Journey. What follows are the other opportunities to connect with people in the church and with ministries both within the walls of the church and in the community and around the world.
Some of the other regular happenings in the life of the church are as follows:
Our Service for Healing and Wholeness is at 7:00 p.m. on the last Sunday evening of the last month of each quarter (the last Sunday in March, June, September, December.) This contemplative service has been created to give people a space to bring their prayers for healing and wholeness to the elders for prayer and laying on of hands. The service is very Presbyterian - done decently and in order - and is a wonderful, quiet space in which we can pray for each other. Ask an elder or call the office if you would like more information.
Faith 'N' Flicks happens at 6:30 p.m. in Fellowship Hall on the third Sunday evening of each month. The movie is typically announced about a week in advance and is usually geared toward an adult audience. After watching the movie, viewers talk about the faith connections in the movie. Bring a snack to share and you might want to bring a comfortable canvas folding chair if you'd prefer that to the chairs in Fellowship Hall.
The WoW (Working on the Word) Bible Study meets each Monday at 9:30 a.m. Start in the kitchen to get a cup of coffee and then meet with the group in either Fellowship Hall or the Young Disciples classroom. This study is normally lead by the pastor and focuses on the text for the upcoming week's sermon. Bring your bible. We try to wrap up by 11:00 a.m. and some folks head to lunch afterward.
Self-directed Mid-week Prayer in the Chapel happens each Wednesday evening at 5 p.m. before Bread for the Journey. The Bess Miller Chapel is a great space in which to pray for personal needs, the congregation, leadership, the Church in the world, national and international needs.
No-Name Gamers meet at 7:00 p.m. on Fridays Fellowship Hall (or in a nearby classroom if Fellowship Hall is being used by another group.) This adult group normally plays dominoes and usually wraps up around 10:00 p.m.
VIPs (Very Important Presbyterians) meet twice a month to share a meal and fellowship. Once a month they meet for breakfast. Once a month they meet for lunch. All are welcome to join them. Locations and times are announced in the bulletin and on the calendars.
Presbyterian Men of the Church meet for breakfast in Fellowship Hall at 8:00 a.m. on the first Saturday morning of the month. All men are welcome. The PMOC sponsor or participate in several major events throughout the year: Chili Cook-Off, Senior Q at Helmwood Healthcare, and the Annual Christmas Party.
Presbyterian Women gather for monthly meetings September through June of each year. They have also been involved in fundraising to replace the flooring in the Fellowship Hall (two years ago) and the hallways (scheduled to be replaced). Other annual events are the Fall Festival and the Spring Luncheon as well as assisting with many events in the life of the church. There are two PW Circles: The Lydia Circle which meets weekly during the 10:00 a.m. Sunday Church School hour and the Bess Miller Morning Circle which meets monthly on the second Wednesday of the month at 10:00 a.m. Both circles are working through the Horizon Bible Study - this year's study is on the book of Revelation.
